Attaining halal certifications from JAKIM, MUIS or other bodies, is a rigorous process that demands strict adherence to specific guidelines. Ensuring that the products produced are permissible under Islamic law is vital.
Here are the general requirements that must be followed for halal certification based on Malaysia’s JAKIM for halal restaurants, premises or establishments.
Halal certification for food premises
Equipment and Setup of Food Premises
For a food premise to be considered for halal certification, there are several key points that must be followed.
- The equipment used must be free from najis (impure elements) and should not contain any hazardous materials. It should also not result in side effects to the products produced.
- Appliances or brushes made from animal hair are strictly prohibited.
- The arrangement of equipment and goods in the factory must be neat, tidy, and safe.
Living Arrangements and Control Mechanism of Workers
- Workers are not allowed to live in the premises compound. However, if necessary, the workers’ living quarters should have a separate entrance to the premise compound. There should be no direct passageway from the worker’s living quarters to the premise compound. Moreover, there must be a control mechanism to monitor the movement in and out of the workers.
Prohibition of Non-Halal Food/Drink and Effective Control System
- Non-halal food or beverages are strictly forbidden to be brought into the premise compound.
- The premise must have an effective control system in place to prevent any interaction with premises that process or prepare non-halal materials.
Certification for Central Kitchens and Outlets
- All central kitchens and outlets for chain restaurants, franchises, and food courts must apply for halal certification from governing bodies such as JAKIM.
Prohibition of Liquor and Related Materials
- Liquor and materials sourced from liquor are strictly prohibited in the halal kitchen and hotel, including the storage area.
These are the basic requirements a premise needs to meet to be considered for Halal certification. Compliance with these guidelines ensures that the products produced are permissible under Islamic law and respect the dietary restrictions of consumers who follow these guidelines.
